Therapy for Depression in North Richland Hills, TX

Treating Depression

Here at Luxx Therapy, all of our therapists are specialists in the treatment of depression. Whether you are suffering from diagnosable Major Depressive Disorder, a depressive episode in the context of a Bipolar Diagnosis, or other specific depressive disorders such as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or general sadness, we know how to help.

a Humanistic Philosophy

Regardless of a diagnosis or not, all of our therapists are grounded in a general Humanistic Philosophy. This matters, because this informs our general view of people, what we believe about the experience of suffering, and how change occurs. Humanism is a school of thought embraced by counselors and researchers such as Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers.

Like them, at Luxx Therapy, we believe:

  1. In their textbook, Theoretical Models of Counseling and Psychotherapy, Fall, Holden, and Marquis assert that humans have an actualizing tendency to grow, to heal when injured, and to develop their full potential. This means that humans tend toward development, relationships, harmony, and self-regulation (Fall, Holden, Marquis, 2010).

  2. This process becomes thwarted when someone’s self-concept is threatened. For example, if I hold the belief “I am smart” and I fail a test, I have experienced a threat to my self-concept. A healthy response may be to tell me things like, “I am smart and I need to study more because I didn’t understand the material” or “My intelligence is not measured by test exams.” A response that may be less healthy could include feelings of panic, identity crisis, or despair as a result of believing that a single test has the power to define one’s intelligence.

  3. Self-concepts can become threatened for many reasons, like in the example above, and the result is often mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, or cognitive health issues.

  4. Holding the space for someone to explore these threats, processing, and working through them in the safety of a therapeutic relationship is the foundational goal of a Humanistic Therapist.

Explore the Things Causing Mental Distress With Our Depression Therapist

While those symptoms sound obvious, sometimes you can feel so negative that you might ignore the symptoms and think to yourself that you’re struggling because you’re just sad, lazy, tired, stressed, weak, dramatic, or just sensitive. Our counselors will help you explore the factors causing your mental distress and will help you develop a more balanced and kind view of self. While individually these signs and symptoms may pass, struggling with multiple symptoms at a time for a period longer than 2 weeks indicates that you may be experiencing Major Depressive Disorder.

CBT, A More Directive Approach is Sometimes Needed

Sometimes, a more directive approach is helpful. Many of our therapists utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in conjunction with a humanistic philosophy for success in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder.

The Connection Between Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors

In this more directive approach, the focus of therapy is the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. When one is experiencing depression, each of these domains is impacted in some way. For example, above we named not enjoying hobbies as a symptom of depression. This may cause one to think, “I no longer enjoy that hobby” which results in a behavior change of not participating in the hobby. CBT targets the thought and encourages curiosity about that thought. In therapy, you may realize that you actually do still like the hobby, but you have been feeling distracted by the weight of depression.

Humans Are Inherently Good

We believe that every individual is inherently good and has an innate drive towards self-growth. What this means is that our therapists are going to help you see your strengths and help you identify factors that have thwarted the natural processes within you to work towards higher levels of functioning; in a word, progress.

A Humanistic Approach

With a humanistic approach, you can be confident you will experience our counselors as empathetic, non-reactive, non-judgmental, and humble. You might be dealing with depression in the aftermath of a life transition that didn’t go the way you had planned. For example, maybe you started college or entered the workforce with great expectations, only to find out that the reality was much grimmer. Perhaps this has resulted in you feeling overwhelmed and stuck, dreading work and the responsibilities of your life. This may be the type of depression in which the safety of a therapeutic relationship can empower you to make the changes you need in your life.

Some symptoms of depression may include:

  • Ongoing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, emptiness, or irritability

  • Constant unexplained fatigue and exhaustion

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Not enjoying your hobbies like you used to

  • Finding it difficult to concentrate, or feeling like your brain has slowed down

  • Isolating yourself from people who love you

  • Constant negative thoughts about yourself, along with shame from wondering why you just can’t get it together

  • Wishing you could go to sleep and not wake up, or wishing you could take a break from life

Setting Realistic Achievable Goals

Setting realistic goals such as intentionally engaging with the hobby may help break the cycle of depression and help one feel more connected to their old self. By learning to identify negative thought patterns and assumptions in your thinking that can lead you away from realistic and helpful thinking, you can experience meaningful change. CBT is not about denying your feelings, or just trying to “think positively”, but learning to manage the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behavior in a healthier way.

CBT Gives You the Tools to Better Understand Yourself and Patterns of Behavior

With practice over time, you can have an impact on the way you think, feel, and behave. With practical tools and strategies to break free from negative thought patterns, increase helpful behaviors, and manage distressing emotions, CBT can help provide you with a better understanding of how these pieces fit together in your life, providing you with a deeper understanding of yourself and increasing your confidence to manage your mental health.
