Level up your mental health through D&D group therapy! Build confidence, communication skills, and boundaries by tackling in-game challenges with therapist Sarah Ziske, LPC-Associate (supervised by Dr. Jessica Endres). Grow through your character's adventures, then carry those victories into real life. Your quest begins here!
At Luxx Therapy, we combine the power of group therapy with the creativity of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) to help you grow in a way that feels more like an adventure than traditional therapy. In our guided sessions, you’ll develop real-world communication skills, experiment with new behaviors, and embark on a journey of self-discovery—all through the lens of your own custom character. A certified Therapeutic Game Master and licensed therapist will guide you and your group through a safe, structured experience where every challenge you face in-game translates to personal growth outside of it.
Currently, our Dungeons & Dragons groups are open to adults with some familiarity with the game, but we plan to expand to more age groups soon. Ready to level up your mental health?
Here at Luxx Therapy, we utilize the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model to implement therapy into TTRPGs.
The key principles of ACT include:
Through these principles, during the session, you will be able to dig deeper into your understanding of yourself and see the perspective of others, allowing for growth, flexibility in thoughts and behaviors, and gain a better understanding of your place in the world.
Our certified Therapeutic Game Master has a love for tabletop role-playing games and has been playing since 2017. Taking this love for the game and applying it to a therapeutic setting has been a perfect fit that we are ready to share with you!
Our values are what you need from a therapist to help you find your light. We CARE:
Role-playing itself is a therapeutic intervention often used in sessions It is a safe place for clients to practice skills, behaviors, and identities, and working with a group fosters communication skills and collaboration. There are many times when problem-solving is important in the game, as well as thinking outside the box, which allows for more flexibility in the client's emotional and social regulation. The setting and adventure can be tailored to the group's therapeutic goals. Each session can be tailored to work on a specific goal, like confidence, communication, boundary setting, and confrontation.
For our current group, we are asking for people who know how to play or are familiar, but we are willing to help others learn how to play if there is a need.
Characters will be created at the first session of each campaign and will have a therapeutic twist. Each character will fit a different aspect of yourself that you would like to address in therapy. For example, working on social skills, you might choose to play a bard who has high charisma.
